Well we have a minute to meditate since nothing is going on in Hungary right now (except the out of date double-0-seven Rodger Moore's visit in Budapest) so let's do some catching up. If you follow our posts (and I know that lots of subscribers do) you could have seen this pattern, the so-called Árpád-stripe flag a lot. People often associate it with fascist and radical movements and say it should be banned like the Soviet red star and the Nazi swastika.
History:
This symbol is called the Árpád-stripes (árpádsáv) which is originally composed of 7 red and silver stripes and named after a House of Hungarian kings, the Árpáds who used this pattern first. To be exact it appeared first on king Imre's coat of arms (on the left) in the 12th century and rumor has it he stole the "pattern" from the Aragonian culture where his wife came from. By the way the Hungarian Guards use the same (ok almost the same) blazon on their uniform (on the right).

This pattern appeared in the Hungarian history many times: the House of Anjou incorporated this symbol into their blazon to prove their loyalty to the country and the legendary freedom fighter RÁKÓCZI Ferenc also used this pattern on his battle flags.

The darkest time of this symbol was the time during the II. World War when a fascist movement, the so-called "cross arrows" used the Árpád-stripes and after owerthrowing the Hungarian government committed mass of crimes under this blazon.

During the communism (1949-1989) all kind of "bourgeois" monarchist symbols were banned and the firs "re-appearance" of the flag was only possible after the transition in 1989. Although the Árpád-stripes can be found on the national coat of arms (on the picture) it is basically typical with radical groups like JOBBIK, the banned association of Blood and Honor or with the protesters on Kossuth square in 2006.

The symbol today:
The dispute is (sometimes) about whether putting this symbol to the banned list like the Soviet and Nazi symbols or not, whether it intimidates groups of people or not. We can hear endless presentations about why Árpád-stripes can be separated from the "cross arrow" movement and also about why not.
IMHO if the topic is about making a list of banned symbols, then Árpád-stripes in its present appearance should be on it.Why? Because 99 of the 100 pictures where you can see it are in connection with radical protests, anti-semite and hateress slogans, and Molotov cocktails. And that is what matters: the context the association, what you think about it first when you see it and not any kind of historical analysis about its origin. It's over, that is the past and this is the present.
But if the question is whether to ban any kind of symbols, my answer is NO. Why? Because it is hilarious. The only effect of banning is the media's focus on insane media hackers who want to draw the attention on themselves or on their pathetic cause by marching in Soviet or Nazi uniforms on the street. This current ban in the Hungarian Penal Code is nothing more than instant "free ad" in the media. Letting these people use any kind of symbols without drawing the attention of the media would be good for two things: we would know what their real nature is, and maybe thanks to the frigidity of the public they realise there is no need for them!

I think that knowledge of the history is important....but ALSO the fact the Árpádflag is a part of Hungary!
I agree there are groups who will misuse it, but it is also a way to bring something across, like Jobbik does this days! They are not FACIST at all. Read on there webside http://www.jobbik.com/ where the really stand for! Before calling them radical!

Géza: The leadership of JOBBIK is not stupid, they know well that if they incorporate unconstitutional lines in their articles of association the court will dismiss their party. This is their decent face.
But they have a face which is their real nature. Look at the group of people around this movement, the music they are listening the newspapers they're reading, the things they are doing on the streets under national holidays.
I didn't say JOBBIK is fascist I say they are extremist who don't respect the fundamental rules of our society.
Is the socialist star and nazi swastika banned in Hungary? I didn't think they were.
As the Communist/Socialist politicians in Hungary and the EU are using propaganda against Magyar Gárda and Jobbik, which is the same type of propaganda which they used to convince the world Hungary was the cause of World War I (convincing everyone the Treaty of Trianon was a good idea), at the same time these same politicians are slowly getting rid of any culture identity of the countries in Europe in trying to create a new race. As countries become members of the EU, they became broke all because the more money the country makes the high the fees, fines, and taxes goes up. A business wants to keep something from the past that has a non-EU measurement standard than the EU will fine that business at least 100,000 dollars. France is bankrupt and more countries are to follow. The Arpad stripes should not be banned and Hungarians should not allow the Communist/Socialist Politicians to take away their culture and call patriots fascists. I thought Hungarians learned from over 40 years of Communist rule but then they put in power a milder Communist party, the Socialist Party; think about this, if you see on the shore a line of crocodiles would you think that there are no crocodiles in the water and start walking in the water or investigate and what and see if one pops their head up. This could go the same for electing politicians, do research and if that politician believes in Socialist and Communists ideas, you will see the rise in your taxes.
